Eleven Years Later

Another Day Along the Way
Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Another day,
Eleven years can disappear quickly. Or slowly. Often, the rapid pace and slow marathons occur simultaneously. As I glance back and recall what occurred in my life eleven years ago, it feels like yesterday. It also feels like a former life.

As I wrote in Changing My Mind:
"Whatever your condition, join the journey. Enter the experience. Be aware of reality. As you critique and confess and compare, here is the dare. Stare at me and my life to see where you are. Think of receiving help from others, of giving more when there is nothing there to give, of living. Really living." (Changing My Mind, Chris Maxwell)

My neurologist remembers:
"You were a fighter. I always say you are stubborn but I mean that as a compliment. You weren't going to let it, or anybody, tear you down." (Changing My Mind, Chris Maxwell)

My family and my friends look back and remember. I appreciate the notes, the encouragement, the love. I am grateful that I've been accepted.

Jesus spoke truth we all need to remember:
(Matthew 5:3, The Message)
"You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule."

The apostle and author Paul worded his confession powerfully:
(2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV)
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

You? Us? After evaluating your accomplishments, reviewing your personality profile, and checking on your investments, glance at yourself. The real you, the hidden you, the no-one-can-know-this-side-of-me you. Think about that person. Pray and confess and request God's help. And, please, do not fight your weakness alone. Help can be found by those who seek it.

Trust me. I remember. And I pray we all become stronger and more in love with God during the next eleven years. Time will not slow down.

Along the way,
Chris Maxwell

Prayer Surrendered: Dear God. I give You thanks. I often ignore Your might. I let You leave my sight. For now, for this moment, I notice. Your faithfulness, Your ongoing and never stopping gush of glorious faithfulness, Your stormy and magnificent might of consistent faithfulness: I notice it. And I need it. So, today, I give praise to my Faithful Father, Friend and Healer. (Changing My Mind, Chris Maxwell)

COMMENTS ABOUT CHRIS MAXWELL'S BOOK "CHANGING MY MIND"
"I knew Chris Maxwell before his illness, but he became my best friend after he began the slow road to recovery. The man I know today is more like Jesus-all because he faced an incredibly difficult physical challenge without ever doubting the Father's love.
This is a journal of his remarkable journey to find healing after a brain injury. You may never suffer from the effects of encephalitis, as Chris did, but we all face life-crippling weaknesses that can sideline us from God's true purpose. Whatever your personal struggle is-physical disability, emotional dysfunction, sexual brokenness or unfortunate life circumstances-Chris' insights will inspire you to press beyond the pain to reach victory." I met Chris Maxwell shortly after he suffered a life changing illness. He helped me get through the lowest point of my life and all the while he was going through a deep, deep valley of his own. It wasn't until years later when I read Changing My Mind that I realized what he had been through and still goes through. I often wonder if Chris hadn't become the man he was "changed" into involuntarily if he would have been able to help me become the person I am today.

If I didn't know and trust you Chris, I would think you had made the entire story up. Tragic yet triumphant.

Having attended your church after your illness, I often heard stories about the former you and the new you. But it wasn't until I read Changing My Mind that I realized just what you and your family had been through. Truly a story of God's grace and provision and one man's unfailing faith and trust in God. I recommend the book to anyone going through a life changing event or disappointment.

I don't know about the "old" Chris Maxwell but the "new" Chris Maxwell is as close to perfect as any man that I've met. God definitely knew what He was doing when He allowed Chris to get sick even if Chris and his family weren't quite sure of that at the time.

I am one who did not know Chris for very long before his illness and wondered if he would remember me. Chris did more than that, he knew me, remembered things about me that make me who I am. And that surprised me more than anything because of the short time that he knew me and there were so many other people that he was more likely to remember. I often wondered if he knew how much it meant to me that he knew and remembered me. May God continue to bless you.

Chris, one thing that really strikes me about you:

We hear Shakespeare thrown around, "What is in a name?" and we tend to think that everything is in a name. I'm not saying a name is not important - people are named for who they will be, communication is heightened with a name, foundational concepts are remembered by the name of the person who revealed them.

You, Chris, may not remember my name; somehow, I know that you know me in spite of it. You show me every day that there is more to a person than their name, that somehow character, personality, and other aspects of a person is the actual person that the name can only represent. Thank you for truly showing that you love me for who I am, not for who I am called.

Do you speak in tongues? If you do do you feel sometimes like it is not real? If you do do you get interpretation? Is it fruitful if we do not get interpretation? like God hears it but we don't? Does it help us?
